I’ll be the first to admit, that Red Sonja is not the deepest character to be developed. She’s been around since the 70s since the Spanish artist Esteban Maroto invented her iconic chain-mail bikini. But it was Frank Thorne who catapulted her into the fanboy spotlight. I have drawn her a few times. This gallery page is dedicated to the art that i have been so far of the She-Devil with a Sword.
Cosplay has definitely encouraged Red Sonja’s popularity among the comic book fandom community. For me it’s an excellent reference source. The drawing based on the cosplayer was a character study.
This was an inking I did using Paul Abram’s pencils.
This one was done for a collector’s sketchbook. We both love the old Frank Thorne Marvel comics so I did this panel redraw from the Red Sonja story Wizards of the Black Sun, which appeared in The Savage Sword of Conan #23 (1977). I added the color since The Savage Sword of Conan was a black and white magazine.
Marvel Feature issue #6 is one of my favorite Red Sonja comic book stories. By click on either of the images above you find more insightfulness about my process for redrawing this comic book cover art originally by Frank Thorne.
I will be returning this Sword and Sorcery character from time to time. So keep a watchful eye out.
