A character I know very well
A Self Portrait
Preliminary pencil study - 06/03/2020
Colored pencil study - 06/06/2020
The preliminary pencil drawing was drawn with graphite pencils on 8.5x11 white cardstock paper.
The colored pencil drawing was drawn with Prismacolor pencils on 9x12 black cardstock paper.
The self portrait is a look at the artist within a certain time in their life. I have often done these introspective drawings when I come to crossroads in my life. It appears at times that the world is coming to an end and in a way it has. I know that change is hard and scary. I know that it is inevitable, as well. If we just go with it it won’t be so hard and scary for us. But the uncertainty is what really stings. I know change will always take me to a better place, but it also means I must let go of the familiar and the safety of knowing it has always been that way. I’m at a great time in my life. I’m not too old to learn or too young to know.
These are some short process videos I shot while working on these drawings.
I also scanned at different times throughout the drawing process to show the steps I take to layering my values and colors
